Point at things

Japanese consider the location of an object when they point at something. They use これ, それ and あれ to refer to something with “this or that”. Which of the words is used is determined by how close this object is to the speaker or the listener. Is the object close to the speaker then これ will be used. Is the object close to the listener then それ will be used. Is the object not close but more far away then あれ will be used.

Examples:

Your Friend:それはなんですか。
You:これはぺんです。
You:これはなんですか。
Your Friend:それはとけいです。
If the object that is pointed at shall be referred by it’s name then この, その and あの will be used.

Customer:このほんはいくらですか。
Employee:にせんひゃくえんです。
Customer:そのかさはいくらですか。
Employee:よんせんいひゃくえんです。

The Particle も

With the particle は we already learned to build sentences like “Takeshi is a japanese”. If we now want to say that for example Tanaka is also a japanese then we will use the partcle も for this purpose.

Takeshi is a Japanese.たけしさんはにほんじんです。
Tanaka is also a Japanese.たなかさんにほんじんです。

Negation

To negate something ja armiasen (じゃありません) or ja nai desu (じゃないです) will be used.

Takeshi is not a Korean.たけしさんはかんこくじんじゃありません。
Tanaka is also not a Korean.たなかさんかんこくじんじゃありません。

Exercise

The vocabulary should be memorized. After that the following exercises can help memorize pointing and negating:

  • Look at the things surrounding you, translate some of them into Japanese and then point at them.
  • Make sentences by repeating the exercises of previous chapters and this time use negation.
